Bentley's Turbo R - A Classic Vehicle From A World-Class Company

Bentley has long been the brand of choice for the powerful and the affluent, and their numerous models have always been sought after because of their degree of comfort, engineering, and all around style. One such car, that was made between 1985 and 1997, is certainly the recognized Bentley Turbo R, an auto that was pronounced by Motor Trend Magazine to be the first Bentley in many years deserving of the legendary name. It has, since that time, become one of the most prominent Bentleys that was ever made.

The first Turbo R rolled out of the manufacturing plant in 1985, and was a high-performance model made by the manufacturer to serve as a replacement for the Mulsanne Turbo. In the beginning, it acquired the turbocharged engine from the Mulsanne Turbo, as well as other features very similar to its predecessor, like retuned suspension, wider tires with alloys, etc. These evolved, however, for the Turbo Rs that were manufactured from 1987 onward, when the motor was retuned with Bosch MK-Motronic fuel injection to add more torque and potential.

Along with the motor change, further modifications were made during the car's run, like adjustments to the seats, developing them into sports seats, and enhancing the rear axle ratio by making it higher. The subtle suspension changes don't appear to be much at first, but they absolutely changed the automobile and made it operate much better. Further improvements over the years would include an improvement in the anti-roll bar rates, the adding of tuned dampers, as well as the inclusion of a Panhard rod to reduce side-to-side movement in corners.

All throughout its years of manufacture, the company did not let lose any formal statistics about the car's capabilities, more specifically, the power of its motor. However, during its feature on the Bentley Turbo R for sale, Motor Trend Magazine provided approximations. They estimated that the engine's power output was around 221 kW, 296 hp, and needed 486.8 lb.ft of torque.

Back then, the Bentley new Turbo R was priced at around US$195,000, just in between the Mulsanne S and the Silver Spur. These days, though, depending on condition and maintenance, a classic Turbo R can certainly still cost a hefty amount. This is a testimony to the car's time honored styling and charm.
