Opinions On Hurley, The Most Recent Record From Geek Rockers Weezer

Geek rock outfit Weezer return this year with their eighth studio offering. Following the highly mixed reviews their last effort (Raditude) got, what's to be expected on Weezer's new album, Hurley?

1) Memories

An OK power-pop song with a catchy chorus, and quintessentially simple Weezer lyrics. Featuring background vocals by Johnny Knoxville and co!

2) Ruling Me

Now and then the more recent Weezer songs have been slammed for being too fluffy, and this song is very unlikely to allay that criticism. Nevertheless, it's great for what it is: a simple, upbeat pop-rock offering.

3) Trainwrecks

This is a much deeper, more thoughtful, slower song with amazing crunchy guitars and expressive hooks.

4) Unspoken

Best track on the CD. Starting off as a lightweight and breezy acoustic song, with a bit of atmospheric flute, it ends with some dangerous guitar!

5) Where's my sex?

This is a crunchier track, but only when it comes to the sound; not the lyrics. It's not about sex, it's about socks. A little uninspired, but the bridge is cool.

6) Run Away

Deep and expressive song, with an angsty, almost irritated feel. The most emotional song on the album, performed with Ryan Adams.

7) Hold On

Terrific example of pop-rock. The captivating repetition of the track grabs your thoughts and pulls you along with it.

8 ) Smart Girls

Songs such as this are perhaps why Weezer lyrics get criticised. You'll either really enjoy it or skip it. Feathery, generic and feels manufactured.

9) Brave New World

This song has some spirit to it, but doesn't appear to go anywhere. Not captivating.

10) Time Flies

Feels almost like a demo, a cool song to sing along with. A cute little song with a unique feel to the other tracks of the CD.

Rating: 6.5 / 10

All in all, a substantial improvement on the last album. A cool, entertaining pop album, if not innovative or imaginative.
