Watering Orchids - The Actual Key To Your Orchids Success
Watering orchids is a high risk pastime, get it wrong and you could have some very dead orchids on your hands.
Orchids are a bit like a troublesome child; you have to work out what they want as they don't come with proper instructions. One of the things which makes orchids such difficult plants is their interaction with their environment. Orchids are fussy, they have a tendency to like a bit of something but not too much of it.
So how do you find out what is best to nurture your orchid? The sole true way to keep your orchid happy is to watch it and see how it responds. But you need some starting points or else you will find that your orchid may have died before it communicated its needs clearly.
We will begin with watering orchids as this is one of the most critical areas to get right. First you need to understand that many orchids get their water from the air not the soil. Look carefully at the roots of your orchid. If they are exposed then you will realize that you need to keep them in a moist environment. They may be partly in the soil and this could be for two reasons, first of all they can be getting some water from the soil or secondly they could be using it to anchor themselves. Which ever it is, it is important to maintain the soil sufficiently moist to keep the orchid happy. If the dirt gets too dry the orchid will lose its hold and you will discover that it is a downward slope from this level. Keeping the soil correct will probably best be achieved by either spraying or sprinkling a handful of water at the base of the plant every couple of weeks.
Now you have the plant well anchored you need to make sure that there is enough moisture in the air to keep it happy as well. Your orchid will not like to be cold or drafts, so make certain you find a nice cozy spot for it. Then simply place a tray or small bowl of warm water next to the orchid. As this evaporates it will form droplets on the orchids leaves, these will drip down and feed the roots. Easy.
You now know how to keep your orchid and how to feed you orchid, but for your orchid to nurture properly you need to have it in the right place. As I said above warm is important; helps with watering and keeps the plant delighted. However, direct sunlight can burn the orchids delicate petals, so make sure you keep it away from window. Equally drafts will causes the roots to get too cold to properly feed the orchid and this will also kill it off.
Once you have found the correct temperature to create the cycles of evaporation required for successfully watering orchids, so long as this is not near a window, where you orchid may encounter sunlight or drafts, you will likely have solved the majority of the difficulties of taking care of orchids.
